Meniere’s Disease
What is it?
Meniere’s disease is a rare inner ear disorder that can result in hearing and balance related symptoms. Currently it is not known exactly what causes Meniere’s but symptoms are believed to present due to an excess of fluid and altered potassium levels affecting vestibular and cochlear structures.
Symptoms
Symptoms typically comes in waves called an “attack” lasting 2-4 hours and can include
-Decrease in hearing or fullness in one ear
-Vertigo
-Imbalance
-Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
-Nausea
-Vomiting
Management
Vestibular Physiotherapy can be helpful in the management of symptoms from Meniere’s disease by developing a home program to improve balance and compensation in the brain.
